Towards optimal explicit time-stepping schemes for the gyrokinetic equations

چکیده
The nonlinear gyrokinetic equations describe plasma turbulence in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. To solve these equations, massively parallel codes are developed and run on present-day supercomputers. The goal of this paper is to improve the efficiency of such computations, thereby allowing for physically more comprehensive studies. Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes are considered to be well suited for time-stepping. Although the numerical algorithms are often highly optimized, performance can still be improved by a suitable choice of the time-stepping scheme, based on spectral analysis of the underlying operator. Here, an operator splitting technique is introduced to combine first-order Runge-Kutta-Chebychev schemes for the collision term with fourth-order schemes for the remaining terms. In the nonlinear regime, based on the observation of eigenvalue shifts due to the (generalized) E×B advection term, an accurate and robust estimate for the nonlinear timestep is developed. The presented techniques can reduce simulation times by factors of up to three in realistic cases. This substantial speedup encourages the use of similar timestep optimized explicit schemes not only for the gyrokinetic equation, but also for other applications with comparable properties.

A General Solution for Implicit Time Stepping Scheme in Rate-dependant Plasticity
In this paper the derivation of the second differentiation of a general yield surface implicit time stepping method along with its consistent elastic-plastic modulus is studied. Moreover, the explicit, trapezoidal implicit and fully implicit time stepping schemes are compared in rate-dependant plasticity. It is shown that implementing fully implicit time stepping scheme in rate-dependant plasti...
متن کاملLocal Time-stepping for Explicit Discontinuous Galerkin Schemes
A class of explicit discontinuous Galerkin schemes is described which time approximation is based on a predictor corrector formulation. The approximation at the new time level is obtained in one step with use of the information from the direct neighbors only. This allows to introduce a local time-stepping for unsteady simulations with the property that every grid cell runs with its own optimal ...
متن کاملExplicit local time-stepping methods for time-dependent wave propagation
Semi-discrete Galerkin formulations of transient wave equations, either with conforming or discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations, typically lead to large systems of ordinary differential equations. When explicit time integration is used, the time-step is constrained by the smallest elements in the mesh for numerical stability, possibly a high price to pay. To overcome that overl...
متن کاملOptimal Strong-Stability-Preserving Time-Stepping Schemes with Fast Downwind Spatial Discretizations
In the field of strong-stability-preserving time discretizations, a number of researchers have considered using both upwind and downwind approximations for the same derivative, in order to guarantee that some strong stability condition will be preserved. The cost of computing both the upwind and downwind operator has always been assumed to be double that of computing only one of the two. Howeve...
متن کاملWater hammer simulation by explicit central finite difference methods in staggered grids
Four explicit finite difference schemes, including Lax-Friedrichs, Nessyahu-Tadmor, Lax-Wendroff and Lax-Wendroff with a nonlinear filter are applied to solve water hammer equations. The schemes solve the equations in a reservoir-pipe-valve with an instantaneous and gradual closure of the valve boundary. The computational results are compared with those of the method of characteristics (MOC), a...
